Freemason History

Socially and politically, Freemasons have played an important part in the development of British Columbia.

The Origins

Freemasonry, the world’s oldest fraternal organization, originated over 600 years ago as a guild of skilled builders in Europe. Today, it stands as a society committed to the personal growth, leadership development, and philanthropic endeavors of its 6 million members.

Freemasonry arrived in British Columbia around 1858, establishing its roots in Victoria. Over the past 150 years, it has become an integral part of the community, with over 140 lodges operating in around 80 halls across B.C. and Yukon. The organization's influence extends to multiple sectors, including the political arena, with more than a dozen premiers having affiliations with the society.

Structure and Governance

Contrary to popular belief, there is no single overarching body governing Freemasons. The structure consists of local units known as lodges and regional units called grand lodges, each operating independently yet interconnected. In British Columbia, our grand lodge serves as a guidepost, offering leadership and direction for various lodges within the province.

Mysteries and Misconceptions

While Freemasonry employs secret symbols, rituals, and passwords, it is not a secret society. It has often been misunderstood due to its complex rites and famous memberships. The Grand Lodge of B.C. addresses misconceptions and states unequivocally that Freemasonry is not a religious organization.

A Journey of Self-Discovery

Freemasonry is a lifelong personal journey of enlightenment, fostering virtues of moral discipline, social orientation, and charity. Members are equipped with practical skills beneficial to their careers, families, and communities. Leadership, public speaking, and organizational management are some of the valuable skillsets imparted.

Philanthropic Undertakings

Not just a social club, Freemasonry is a fraternity committed to societal improvement. Masons worldwide are known for donating millions to charitable causes, reinforcing the organization's underlying principle of community service and philanpthory.
